Holst: A Celebration in Song

To celebrate the 147th birthday of Gustav Holst on 21st September 2021, the Oriel Singers present a programme drawing on music which influenced Holst, including a selection of Renaissance motets and Bach’s ‘Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf’, music by his contemporaries, including Vaughan Williams and Charles Villiers Stanford, the Mass in A minor by Imogen Holst, and Holst’s popular ‘Six Choral Folk-Songs’.

The Oriel Singers have built a reputation for the highest standards of choral music-making, having performed with distinguished groups including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, in broadcasts on BBC Radios 3 and 4, in many English cathedral venues and on concert tours widely through Europe.

Oriel Singers

This is the first concert that the Oriel Singers have given since early March 2020, and they have been enjoying their return to rehearsals over the summer, working on the music al fresco in line with Covid guidance at the time.

Following several months of online rehearsals, they find it a joy to be able to make music together again, and a great way for them to get back to singing. We look forward to celebrating Holst in song with them.

Covid Precautions

We will be adhering to the Covid precautions in place in St Andrew’s Church, with the reassurance of sufficient seating space for social distancing, and masks are recommended in particular while moving around the building.
